MAFS 2023: What we learnt about the brides and grooms from the hens’ and bucks’ nights
There are always some interesting revelations at a hen or stag night.
Typically, it’s a late-night confession or disturbing photographic evidence that emerges the next day proving that your flawless dance moves weren’t, in fact, flawless at all.
In the case of the Married at first sight, hen and goat nights, many of the usual disasters still apply. During Episode 1, we are treated to a series of awkward interactions, inappropriate confessions and startling judgments. Unfortunately, there are very few terrible dance moves.

The best part is that none of these people have ever met. Which means there is no context for anything that is said and done.
The confusion, concern and surprise on the faces of the future fellow brides and grooms match our own expressions.
The evening is loaded with revelations, insights and just the right amount of ground work for future friendships and spicy clashes. And of course there are a few contestants who really left us with something to think about.
Melissa
First, we have 41-year-old hairdresser and mother, Melissa.
In her exact words, Melissa may seem like “a girl next door,” but she’s actually “a bit of a freak in the sheets.”

She is no ordinary mom. Mel is sassy, loud, loves role playing and loves sex. Really like sex. “Sex is huge,” confirms Melissa.
She’s had enough of “weekend warriors” and is ready to meet her own Thor (and his “big hammer”).
Melissa is ready to liven up her partner’s life – and she starts by spreading some of her energy around the hens.
As the oldest in the room, Melissa wants the “baby cubs” to see her Mama Bear’s hurt side. She quickly lets everyone know that she is a very sexual being. She also very specifically lets co-bride Melinda know that until now she enjoys a healthy sex life with younger men – aka her “f–k boys”.

Melinda is stunned by this information, as she met Melissa about two minutes earlier. Melissa is not pleased that Melinda is not interested in sleeping with her husband on their wedding night. And in return, Melinda is unimpressed by Melissa’s “overwhelming” attitude and helpful “advice”.
“I just feel like I’m so wise compared to all of them,” admits Melissa, encouraging all brides to keep their sexual options open for the all-important wedding night.
“I feel like I’ve lived the life they want to live.”
Not all of them. Melinda is horrified.
There is a fraction too much friction between these two and we are here to watch this space.
Cameron
Cameron is a carpenter from a remote area in the Northern Territory and comes complete with beautiful dimples and a neat man bun.
He’s a little lonely and “has a lot of love to give.” Cam immediately wins us over by admitting he feels “nervous and a little scared and insecure.”

Despite that, he is ready to fall in love. “I’m going to give it my all,” he says, flashing the dimples – and we believe him.
Cam reveals this will be his first relationship ever, as he is usually 900 km outside of civilization.
“I haven’t really given myself the chance to find someone yet,” he says.
We must protect Cam at all costs.

Jesse
“Most people, when they meet me, would describe me as pretty cocky and arrogant,” is the opening line of wedding celebrant Jesse.
He claims that’s a misread – he’s just confident with who he is, and he likes to be an individual. “Fight the force!” Jesse cheered. The ‘power’ is seemingly fueled by a long list of ‘icks’.

Icks – for those who aren’t aware – are things that can instantly turn you off from someone. For example, their penchant for farting, terrible breath or bad fashion sense.
Or, in the case of Jesse, pretty much everything.
Crystals. Star signs. Obsessed with social media. “Puffed up lips”. False eyelashes. Powerlifting. Gym junkies. Those who enjoy wine.
We can’t wait to meet Jesse’s future wife.
Jesse’s fellow groom agrees that he’s going to add some “spice” to the experiment. He was called ‘a unique cat’ and we couldn’t agree more.
Harrison
As the boys open up about their search for love, companionship and vulnerability – all the usual ingredients for a stag party – Harrison arrives. Harrison is not here to discuss vulnerability.
Harrison is here to let you know that he is a catch.
“Girls think I’m hot,” he opened. “If you get a better guy, I’ll beat him by 10 percent.”

Hunky Harrison isn’t sure why everyone at the goats is talking about love. (Nine)
But unfortunately, Harrison had his share of heartbreak. He was cheated on once.
“I’m so glad it happened while I’m still young and hot,” he shares bravely. “Imagine that happened [when I was] like, 40 or 50, where I’m like… all my options are gone.”
Mel, cover your ears.
“This is a Bucks party and we’re talking about love?” Harrison pulls together. “Come on, boys… let’s make shots, let’s get f–ked up!”
We’re thankful that at least he’s not suggesting a shoe.
