Malone Albert “Al” Tracy

WEST GARDINER – Malon Albert “Al” Tracy, 90, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2023 at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Long Term Care–Graybirch in Augusta, following a brief illness. He was born in Portland on April 19, 1932, the only son and youngest child of Malon Tracy and Rose Norton Tracy. He grew up with the nickname “Sonny” in Oakland and graduated from Williams High School in 1950.

Al was a veteran of the Korean Conflict Era and Peacetime, serving in the Air Force from 1950 – 1956, and then later in the Air National Guard in Washington, DC, Bangor and Augusta, Maine for many years. He retired with the rank of Master Sergeant, and was most proud of his time spent as a Loadmaster on C-130s and other military aircraft. Al had a lifelong love of airplanes and flying, especially as a private pilot in his first airplane, a 1967 Cessna Skyhawk, and later, in two consecutive Beechcraft Musketeers.

Al married Dawn McCann in 1954, and together they had five children. He was a man of many talents and worked mostly as a traveling salesman and business owner in Maine and Ohio. On his return to Maine he met and married Sandra (Schenck) Mellor of West Gardiner.

Al was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Sandy; his parents; three sisters, Dorothy, Charlotte and Glennis; and two grandsons, Michael “Mikey” Muzerolle and Joe Tracy.

He is survived by three sons, Dan Tracy and his wife Cynthia of West Gardiner, Mark Tracy and his wife Christie of Oakland, Michael Tracy and his wife Laura of Oakland, one daughter, Wendy Hosea and husband Tim of Oakland, one stepdaughter Lisa Hassam and husband Tim of Port Richey, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a private burial at East Mercer Cemetery in the spring.
