The Six Guys an Immigrant Trans Person of Colour will Date in Melbourne

A lighthearted mix of stand-up and situation comedy exploring the intersections of life for someone living on the fringes, The Six Guys an Immigrant Trans Person of Color Will Date in Melbourne by Dax Carney is presented as part of the 2023 Midsumma Festival , starting February 6th at La Mama headquarters.

There are never few opportunities for transgender representation at any given time. Dax Carnay (They/Them), a trans-feminine, non-binary writer and performer from Manila, shares her struggle with how difficult it is to find material that accurately depicts life as an immigrant trans person in the seven times the “most worth living.” “ chosen trans person looks city in the world.”

From coming out to family, being uprooted from their place of comfort and thrown before the world’s greatest crisis, navigating cultural differences and trying to find love within marginalized groups, The Six Guys do what everyone does: happiness find where they can, with who they can.

Directed by critically acclaimed Melburnian theater maker Beng Oh, the play finds humor through despair and sadness to turn adversity into comedy.

“So I decided to write Six Guys as an ode to the general reluctance to show the true struggles of the marginalized community,” Dax said. “I wanted to go beyond the trivialization, beyond the doom and gloom, beyond the active ‘head turning’.

“I’ve recently learned to really recreate the truth of a tragedy by finding the humor in it. Because what is comedy – but tragedy under the microscope. And I think that’s what Six Guys is about,” Dax said.

Watch The Six Guys and fall in love with lust; Crying and laughing at the realities trans people face every day.

Hilarious, heartwarming and inspirational, it takes you to the end of the rainbow where we can all discover and celebrate that love is love.

Dax Carney has held various roles with the University of the Philippines Repertory Company.
